Oakland Uiversity : By Michael Buteau and Curtis EichelbergerMarch 19 (AFP) – Cornell University, Temple University’s 78-65 upset of the first victory in the college basketball national championship football and win the first Ivy League team in 12 years.

University of the West Virginia beat Morgan State 77-50 to avoid becoming the fourth major conference in the Middle School of the Judiciary in the tournament for the first two days. West Virginia, the No. 2 seed in the East Regional, advanced to the second round of the game against Missouri, and the winner against Clemson 86-78.

Two Big Ten schools also won the first-round matches today. Purdue defeated Siena College 72-64 victory over Wisconsin Wofford College 53-49.

Louis Dale led Cornell with 21 points in the Jacksonville Memorial Arena to veterans in the state of Florida. And 12th-seeded Big Red led by 11 points in the first half, when they shot 68 percent, extending the margin to as many as 19 per second.

“It’s a great thing for us in the league,” Wade told reporters after the game. “We have in the Premier League is good. It was difficult for us to win. Princeton is a good team, and Harvard is good, and I think it’s just great for us in the league in general.”

Senior forward Ryan Whitman, Ivy League Player of the Year, had 20 points and five rebounds for Cornell University. Ryan Brooks and Juan Fernandez led the fourth-seeded Temple with 14 points each.

Ivy League scarcity

Cornell, winner of three consecutive Ivy League, had lost the first round of games in all four previous appearances at the National Association of Collegiate Athletic tournament. This is the first win for an Ivy League Princeton University where the team defeated the University of Nevada in Las Vegas in 1998.

Big Red play fourth-seeded Wisconsin in two days. No Ivy League school had won in the second round of the game since the University of Pennsylvania defeated North Carolina in 1979.

Xavier University, the sixth seed in the West Regional, and defeated 11th-seeded University of Minnesota 65-54 to reach the second round. Xavier will face the winner of today’s match between No. 3 University of Pittsburgh, and No. 14 University of Auckland.

There are 16 first-round matches scheduled for today.

West Virginia, Big East champion, Villanova, where he joined the only winners so far this conference, who chose the field of eight teams to the tournament. Georgetown, Marquette and Notre Dame in the Big East all lost yesterday.
