Koirala, who was suffering from respiratory disease for many years, died at his daughter’s home in Kathmandu, Nepal Television reported.
The veteran leader gambled his political career to make peace with Maoist rebels who are waging a rebellion against the state ten years.
The peace agreement signed in 2006 ended the conflict that has killed at least 16,000 people, with thousands more still unaccounted for.
Witnesses said thousands of people gathered at his daughter’s home to offer their condolences to four times as prime minister, a member of a political family credited with helping to spread democracy in Nepal.
Koirala to lead the nation in the Himalayas through some of the great revolutions, including the mightiest surprise when 10 members of the royal family were shot dead by His Highness the Crown Prince went on a rampage in the case of sugar.
Was seen as a stabilizing force in the country which has seen 18 governments in the past 20 years – despite the fact that, like many politicians in Nepal faced repeated accusations of corruption.
Lasting legacy began in April 2006 when it sided with the Maoist rebels to force the former King Gyanendra to give up dictatorial powers.
Political change was followed by a rapid rate, with the former Maoist rebels to win the historic elections in 2008, and the abolition of 240-year-old Hindu monarchy and turning this poor country in the secular republic.
