the annual awards was the finale to 21st annual Billboard Latin Music Conference. Much of America as well as people around the world was watching this popular award show. The Billboard Latin Music Awards honor the most popular albums, songs, and performers in Latin music, and that is determined by the tally of sales and radio air play.

According to Wikipedia, the Billboard Latin Music Awards grew out of the Billboard Music Awards program from Billboard Magazine, an industry publication charting the sales and radio airplay success of musical recordings. The awards began in 1990. In addition to awards given on the basis of success on the Billboard charts, the ceremony includes the Spirit of Hope award for humanitarian achievements and the Lifetime Achievement award, as well as awards by the broadcasting partner.
